Know Your Cannabis: Live Resin vs. Rosin
Cannabis flower, concentrate and infused products often have very unique names: names based on crosses or brands , acronyms, words that just sound made up. There are concentrates with similar yet different names that mean the same thing, like badder and batter. Others that sound the same but are very different, like resin and rosin. These can be confusing to even people within the industry. So, what is the difference between live resin and rosin?
Live resin and rosin are both cannabis extracts that can be dabbed or smoked in a vape pen. This is where the similarities between these two concentrates end.
Live resin is extracted from fresh, frozen flower that hasn’t been dried or cured to preserve the flavor and terpenes. After the flower is harvested, it is frozen and packed into a closed loop system. A solvent, like butane, carbon dioxide or ethanol is used to release the trichomes from the plant matter. The solvent is removed by heating it. The resulting live resin is very potent and flavorful.
Rosin is a solventless extract made using pressure and heat. It can be extracted from flower, kief, or hash. Using a heated press, the flower is pressed with enough force to extract the terpenes and cannabinoids from the trichomes. Rosin can have different colors and consistencies, depending on the flower or hash, as well as the amount of heat and pressure applied. Live rosin can also be made using the same technique described above with fresh frozen flower.
