Know Your Cannabis: Ingestion
Another popular method of cannabis consumption is ingestion. Ingestion is defined as eating, drinking or swallowing a cannabis product. The THC and other cannabinoids are absorbed in the stomach, liver and intestines. Ingestion of cannabis infused products, or edibles, can lead to stronger physical and psychoactive effects than other methods of consumption.
Ingestion has a longer onset time than other methods. Because the edible has to be digested and metabolized first, onset time can be anywhere from 15 minutes to three hours. Effects last 4 to 8 hours, but can last longer depending on the specific product and the dose taken. With the long onset time, it is recommended that you start with a low dose and be patient to avoid taking too much.
There are many different ways to ingest cannabis. Candies and other infused foods are popular with recreational and medical purchasers. This includes items like hard candy, gum, chocolates, fruit chews, baked goods, gummies and butter. Cannabis infused drinks have become popular as they have a faster onset time than traditional edibles. Drinks include infused seltzers, sodas, teas, liquid enhancers, powdered mixed and popsicles.
There are also products like capsules, pills and tablets that are a great alternative for those who may not be able to have sugar, flavorings or other allergens. RSOs, Rick Simpson Oils, are popular with medical patients. The super concentrated oil is already activated and meant to be ingested instead of inhaled.
