Know Your Cannabis: Caryophyllene

To continue our Know Your Cannabis: Terpenes series, we’re looking at one of the most common terpenes - Caryophyllene!

Caryophyllene, also referred to as beta-caryophyllene, is an herbal and spicy terpene. Also found in black pepper, cinnamon, and cloves, caryophyllene is the source of the peppery, woody aroma in many strains. It is also an FDA approved food additive used to enhance flavors and as a natural preservative.

Caryophyllene is a unique terpene because it acts like a cannabinoid and can activate the CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. When THC activates receptors in the endocannabinoid system, this causes the “high” feeling generally associated with THC as well as the more medicinal benefits. When caryophyllene activates these same receptors, it provides many of the medicinal benefits without the psychoactive effects.

As one of the most researched terpenes, caryophyllene is shown to have many therapeutic benefits. Caryophyllene is said to provide pain relief, act as an anti-inflammatory, reduce depression and anxiety.

Find high caryophyllene strains like Gelato, Bubba Kush, Chemdog, and Sour Diesel at your local Consume dispensary!
