Know Your Cannabis: Sublingual

Sublingual absorption is a subtle and smokeless method of consumption. Sublingual absorption is defined as allowing a cannabis product to be absorbed through the mucous membranes in the mouth and under the tongue. This method is different than ingestion because the products are absorbed into the bloodstream without needing to be digested.

Sublingual products have an onset time of 15 to 30 minutes. The effects of sublingual absorption can last from 2 to 4 hours. Sublingual products are said to have less psychoactive effects than edibles because they are not digested. With direct absorption into the bloodstream, sublingual products have a quicker onset than edibles which allows them to be used for temporary issues like seizures or panic attacks.

Tinctures are the most popular sublingual cannabis product. Tinctures are made with cannabis oil infused into MCT oil, vegetable glycerin, or alcohol. These are popular products because they are easy to dose, and the effects are consistent. When taking a tincture sublingually, it is suggested that you hold it under your tongue for 30 seconds to let it absorb.

Besides tinctures, there are other products that are also absorbed sublingually. Sprays, strips, and mints are popular alternatives to tinctures. Other products like cannabis drinks, gum, hard candies, and melts that allow cannabinoids to be absorbed both sublingually and through digestion.
