Know Your Cannabis: Topicals

Topical application refers to applying a cannabis infused products to the skin. This method of cannabis use allows for the cannabinoids to be absorbed slowly, which allows users to avoid the psychoactive effects of THC. Topical cannabis products are generally applied to the area that requires relief. Along with cannabinoids, topical cannabis products often use essential oils and other beneficial ingredients.

Topical products have an onset time of 15 to 30 minutes; yet, some products are designed to offer nearly instant effects. The effects of topicals can last 6 or more hours. The long last effects are due to the slow absorption of THC and other cannabinoids through the skin. Products like transdermal patches can cause an intoxicating effect because they have a carrier that allows cannabinoids to permeate the skin.

Topical cannabis can be used to treat many ailments including both localized and all over pain, skin conditions, inflammation, and movement disorders. Popular products include oils, balms, salves, creams, and transdermal patches. Except for patches, these products will offer localized relief. Topical cannabis use for pleasure has also become popular. Products like infused lube and sprays are designed to enhance sensation.
